Squirms right after women's laughs? Not at first (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wriggles

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'squirms' is the definition.
(I know this)

'right after women's laughs? not at first' is the wordplay.
'right after women' becomes 'wr' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'laughs?' becomes 'giggles' (giggling is a kind of laughing).
'not at first' means to remove the first letter.
'giggles' with its first letter taken away is 'iggles'.
'wr'+'iggles'='WRIGGLES'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for wriggles that I've seen is " Writhes".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
