Crossword Genius

Stance assumed by newspaper shows balance (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

poise

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'balance' is the definition.
(I know that balance can be written as poise)

'stance assumed by newspaper' is the wordplay.
'stance' becomes 'pose' (I've seen this in another clue).
'assumed' is an insertion indicator (inserted letters are assumed or taken in).
'by newspaper' becomes 'i' (UK newspaper. I am not sure about the 'by' bit.).
'pose' enclosing 'i' is 'POISE'.

'shows' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for poise that I've seen before include "cool" , "Dignified and self-assured manner" , "Sang-froid" , "Dignity and assurance of manner" , "Aplomb" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
