Crossword Genius

Standard French author's nonsense devoured by the famous (5,3,7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stars and stripes

'standard' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'french author's nonsense devoured by the famous' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'nonsense' could be 'tripe' (I've seen this before) and 'tripe' is found in the answer.
'famous' could be 'star' (I've seen this before) and 'star' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for stars and stripes that I've seen before include "indications of rank" , "Standard" , "indicators of military rank" , "American flier" , "The US flag" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
