Crossword Genius

Start course to make your position more secure (3,2)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dig in

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'secure' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'start course to make your position more' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'course' could be 'n' and 'n' is found within the answer.
'position' could be 'dig' (dig is a kind of position) and 'dig' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'i' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dig in that I've seen before include "Enjoy the food" , "protect himself" , "Start eating (informal)" , "Begin eating (informal)" , "Start to scoff" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
