Crossword Genius

State benefit right's accepted (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

assert

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'state' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'benefit right's accepted' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'accepted' could be 'a' (financial abbreviation) and 'a' is found within the answer.
'right' could be 'rt' and 'rt' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for assert that I've seen before include "Aver, maintain" , "State categorically" , "Declare or affirm" , "State firmly, declare as true" , "State firmly and positively" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
