Crossword Genius

Stepping on slope in front of Ted Heath (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

trampling

'stepping on' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'slope in front of ted heath' is the wordplay.
'slope' becomes 'ramp' (I've seen this in another clue).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'front of' indicates taking the first letters (the letter at the front of the word).
'heath' becomes 'ling' (ling is a kind of heath).
The initial letter of 'ted' is 't'.
't'+'ling'='tling'
'ramp' going into 'tling' is 'TRAMPLING'.

(Another definition for trampling that I've seen is " Stepping on".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
