Crossword Genius

Steve jettisoned Victor with anger at cheap boat tickets (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

steerage

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'boat tickets' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'steve jettisoned victor with anger at cheap' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'anger' could be 'rage' (rage is a kind of anger) and 'rage' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for steerage that I've seen before include "government" , "cheap transport" , "It's the cheapest way to go by sea" , "Ship's accommodation with lowest fares" , "Cheapest part of passenger ship" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
