Crossword Genius

Stiff grass around yard (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

body

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stiff' is the definition.
(I know that stiff can be written as body)

'grass around yard' is the wordplay.
'grass' becomes 'dob' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'around' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'yard' becomes 'y' (abbreviation).
'dob' back-to-front is 'bod'.
'bod'+'y'='BODY'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for body that I've seen before include "Cadaver" , "Individual" , "One-piece undergarment for women, covering the torso" , "welcomed in Madeira" , "Group of people" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
