Crossword Genius

Stingy Edward shut in the cupboard (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

closeted

'shut in the cupboard' is the definition.
(shut away in a closet)

'stingy edward' is the wordplay.
'stingy' becomes 'close' (both can mean miserly).
'edward' becomes 'ted'.
'close'+'ted'='CLOSETED'

(Other definitions for closeted that I've seen before include "secret" , "Cedes lot, being shut away" , "Confined to a small space, as for intensive work" , "Do select, being in state of cautious privacy" , "Shut away for private talk" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
