Crossword Genius

Stoical heavyweight boxer attracting a lot of flak (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fatalistic

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stoical' is the definition.
(both can mean resigned to events)

'heavyweight boxer attracting a lot of flak' is the wordplay.
'heavyweight' becomes 'fat' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'boxer' becomes 'Ali' (Muhammad Ali).
'attracting' says to put letters next to each other.
'a lot of' means to remove the last letter (a lot of but not all of the word).
'flak' becomes 'stick' (I've seen this before).
'stick' with its last letter removed is 'stic'.
'fat'+'ali'+'stic'='FATALISTIC'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fatalistic that I've seen before include "Accepting lot" , "Resigned" , "Believing in predestination" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
