Stop calling for gin rummy loudly (4,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ring off

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stop calling' is the definition.
(as in to ring off a phonecall)

'for gin rummy loudly' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'gin' is 'ing' which is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'for' is 'rof' which is within the remaining letters.
'loudly' could be 'f' (short for forte - 'loud' in music) and 'f' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ring off that I've seen before include "Hang up" , "Put the phone down" , "Finish speaking" , "sign engagement's terminated?" , "End a phone call" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
