Stop in lane for spending a penny? (9)
I believe the answer is:
tollbooth
'stop in lane' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?
'for spending a penny?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for tollbooth that I've seen before include "roadside kiosk" , "Kiosk for payments (to cross, eg, bridge)" .)
