Crossword Genius

Stops Shakespeare's Peter being heard? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

quints

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stops' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

I don't understand the remainder of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for quints that I've seen is " Fifths in music: sequences of five cards in piquet".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
