Crossword Genius

Stray this writer's recalled feeding fruit (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

deviate

'stray' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'writer's recalled feeding fruit' is the wordplay.
'writer's' becomes 'i've' ('I have' can refer to the person writing).
'recalled' says the letters should be written in reverse (to recall can mean to bring something back).
'feeding' means one lot of letters goes inside another (one word is fed by another set of letters).
'fruit' becomes 'date' (date is a kind of fruit).
'ive' back-to-front is 'evi'.
'evi' put inside 'date' is 'DEVIATE'.

'this' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for deviate that I've seen before include "Differ" , "Diverge (from a course)" , "Turn away" , "Turn aside from accepted way" , "Turn aside from course of action" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
