Crossword Genius

Stripped of flesh, act fatal: icy tombs found here (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

catacomb

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fatal icy tombs found here' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'stripped of flesh act' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
an anagram of 'act' is 'cat' which is within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for catacomb that I've seen before include "crypt" , "Underground Roman burial place" , "set of tunnels" , "burial site" , "underground vault" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
