'strong emotion' is the definition.
(hate is a strong or intense emotion)

'husband took dinner' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'husband' could be 'h' (abbreviation) and 'h' is located in the answer.
'took' could be 'ate' (eating is a kind of taking) and 'ate' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'as' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hate that I've seen before include "Odium" , "Intense dislike" , "'Unimaginable as ---- in Heav'n': Milton" , "Abhor" , "Passionately dislike" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
