Strong start to Howard's wedding vows? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

iron

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'strong' is the definition.
(iron can mean strong or powerful)

'start to howard's wedding vows?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'howard' could be 'ron' (Ron Howard) and 'ron' is found within the answer.
A single letter 'i' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for iron that I've seen before include "Strong metal; golf club" , "Remove creases from" , "sort of club" , "What's used to make pitch" , "Main part of steel" .)
