Student whose wages are a pound (7)
I believe the answer is:
learner
'student' is the definition.
(someone who is learning)
'wages are a pound' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'are' is 'ear' which is located in the answer.
'pound' could be 'l' (the pound sign is based on an L) and 'l' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'whose' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for learner that I've seen before include "One with an L-plate" , "One ascertaining" , "Pupil or apprentice" , "Student (of driving?)" , "Trainee (driver)" .)
