Successful new thing, obviously not NG (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hit

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'successful' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'new thing obviously not ng' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'thing' could be 'it' and 'it' is located in the answer.
A single letter 'h' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hit that I've seen before include "Chart topper" , "Visit to website" , "Of a play, a smashing success" , "Successful stroke, conspicuous success or connection to a website" , "Popular song; strike" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
