Sunny side down? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

south

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sunny side' is the definition.
'south' can be an answer for 'side' (south side is a kind of side). I'm not certain of the 'sunny' bit.

'down?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'down?' could be 'out' ('out' can be similar in meaning to 'down') and 'out' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'sh' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for south that I've seen before include "Direction to the right of sunrise" , "Down on a map" , "Compass point" , "1949 musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, made into a film in 1958" , "Antarctica" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
