I believe the answer is:

pared

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'superficially cut' is the definition.
'pared' can be an answer for 'cut' (I've seen this in another clue). I'm not certain of the 'superficially' bit.

I don't understand the remainder of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pared that I've seen before include "Trimmed like pencil." , "Whittled as with pencil" , "Did prune" , "Of a fruit, peeled" , "Peeled the outer surface" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
