Crossword Genius

Support for a retired person (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bedstead

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'support' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'a retired person' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
'person' could be 'ted' (Ted is an example) and 'ted' is located in the leftover letters.
The remaining letters 'beds' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bedstead that I've seen before include "Frame etc on which one sleeps" , "Framework supporting springs and mattresses" , "Frame upon which a mattress sits" , "Frame for a sleeping person" , "Frame used for supporting a mattress" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
