Crossword Genius

Support journalist and set out to enter China (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pedestal

'support' is the definition.
(I know that pedestal is a type of support)

'journalist and set out to enter china' is the wordplay.
'journalist' becomes 'ed' (short for editor).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'out' indicates an anagram (out can mean wrong or inaccurate).
'to enter' indicates putting letters inside.
'china' becomes 'pal' (china plate is Cockney rhyming slang for mate).
'set' with letters rearranged gives 'est'.
'ed'+'est'='edest'
'edest' going inside 'pal' is 'PEDESTAL'.

(Other definitions for pedestal that I've seen before include "Base for, eg, statue" , "Supporting column of a washbasin" , "A statue stands on it" , "Architectural support or base" , "Place for hero" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
