Supports a further course? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

seconds

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'supports' is the definition.
(seconding is a kind of supporting)

'a further course?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'further' could be 'on' (synonyms) and 'on' is located in the answer.
'course?' could be 'se' and 'se' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'cds' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for seconds that I've seen before include "More food!" , "They should be present at a duel" , "not for long periods?" , "Supporters - they are blemished" , "in a minute!" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
