Survive like the tenth batsman? (7)
I believe the answer is:
outlast
'survive' is the definition.
(I know that survive can be written as outlast)
'like the tenth batsman?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'like' could be 'as' and 'as' is found within the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for outlast that I've seen before include "Persist longer than" , "Lout sat (anag.)" , "carry on after all others" , "Live longer than" , "Survive longer than" .)
