Swapped coins with old penny (7)

I believe the answer is:
changed
'swapped' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with ownership as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?
'coins with old penny' is the wordplay.
'coins' becomes 'change' (change can mean coins).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'old penny' becomes 'd' (pre-decimal abbreviation for penny).
'change'+'d'='CHANGED'

(Other definitions for changed that I've seen before include "Modified" , "Different" , "Turned" , "Altered - substituted" .)
