Sweet date avoided the question (6)
I believe the answer is:
fudged
'avoided the question' is the definition.
'fudged' can be an answer for 'avoided' (fudging is a kind of avoiding). I'm not certain of the 'the question' bit.
'sweet date' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'sweet' could be 'fudge' (fudge is a kind of sweet) and 'fudge' is found within the answer.
'date' could be 'd' (abbreviation e.g. dob - date of birth) and 'd' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for fudged that I've seen before include "Put together in makeshift way, faked" , "Faked using soft sweet?" .)
