Crossword Genius

Sweet deceiver (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

humbug

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'sweet' is the first definition.
(I've seen this before)

'deceiver' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for humbug that I've seen before include "Hypocrite or peppermint sweet" , "Boiled sweet - rubbish" , "Noise of a bee with an insect makes a sham" , "Pretentious talk - peppermint sweet" , "Hypocrisy - bah!" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
