Crossword Genius

Sweet thing of little consequence (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

trifle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'sweet' is the first definition.
(trifle is a kind of sweet)

'thing of little consequence' is the second definition.
'trifle' can be an answer for 'thing' (I have seen 'Insignificant thing ' mean 'trifle' so perhaps 'thing' could also mean 'trifle'). I am unsure of the 'of little consequence' bit.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for trifle that I've seen before include "Cold dessert" , "A little thing for the pudding" , "nothing?" , "A small portion" , "Thing of little value or importance" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
