Crossword Genius

Synthetic rubber rope found coiled in river at Northampton (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

neoprene

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'synthetic rubber' is the definition.
(I know that neoprene is a type of synthetic rubber)

'rope found coiled in river at northampton' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
an anagram of 'rope' is 'eopr' which is located in the answer.
'river at northampton' could be 'nene' (I've seen this before) and 'nene' is found in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for neoprene that I've seen before include "Synthetic rubber-like polymer" , "Synthetic polymer; none peer (anag.)" , "Synthetic rubber - ne'er open (anag)" , "Synthetic like rubber" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
