I cannot really see how this works, but
'mongrels' could be 'curs' ('cur' can be a synonym of 'mongrel') and 'curs' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ors' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
