Crossword Genius

Tailor appears to have heard of hair (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

seamstress

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'tailor' is the definition.
(I know that seamstress is a type of tailor)

'heard of hair' is the wordplay.
'heard of' becomes 'seams' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'hair' becomes 'tress' (tress is a kind of hair).
'seams'+'tress'='SEAMSTRESS'

'appears to have' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for seamstress that I've seen before include "sewer" , "Dressmaker" , "Woman who sews for a living" , "Midinette" , "needlewoman" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
