Tainted sports official gets first and fourth misplaced (6)
I believe the answer is:
impure
'tainted' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'sports official gets first and fourth misplaced' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'first' could be 'i' (I in Roman numerals eg Elizabeth I) and 'i' is found within the answer.
'fourth misplaced' could be 'p' (4th letter of 'misplaced') and 'p' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'mure' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
(Other definitions for impure that I've seen before include "Unclean" , "Defiled" , "Dirty or immoral" , "Adulterated or unchaste" , "Tainted, not chaste" .)
