Crossword Genius

Take advantage of what Italy and Israel are said to need (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

capitalise

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'need' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I don't see?

'take advantage of what italy and israel are said' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'take' could be 'pit' (pitting is a kind of taking) and 'pit' is present in the answer.
'italy' could be 'i' and 'i' is present in the answer.
'are' could be 'a' (short for 'are', historical unit of measurement) and 'a' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for capitalise that I've seen before include "providing fund" , "Write as big character" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
