Take fright like Peter? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

panic

'take fright' is the definition.
(become frightened)

'peter?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'peter?' could be 'pan' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'pan' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'like' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for panic that I've seen before include "Horror" , "Sudden, infectious fear" , "much unease" , "Sudden alarm" , "Lose one's cool" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
