Crossword Genius

Take notice? I'd say that man did (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

heeded

'did' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with social activities as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'take notice? i'd say that man' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'notice?' could be 'heed' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'heed' is present in the answer.
'man' could be 'ed' (short for Edward) and 'ed' is found within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for heeded that I've seen before include "Listened, minded" , "Took notice of" , "Respected" , "Paid attention to, say warning" , "Took note" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
