Crossword Genius

Take ship with unpopular captain and this will be your reward (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bounty

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'reward' is the definition.
(I know that bounty is a type of reward)

'take ship with unpopular captain and this will be your' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is found in the answer.
'unpopular' could be 'out' (similar in meaning) and 'out' is present in the remaining letters.
'with' could be 'by' (both can mean close together) and 'by' is found within the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bounty that I've seen before include "Name of Captain Bligh's mutinous ship" , "Generosity in giving - or mutinous ship" , "blood money" , "Christian vessel" , "Present" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
