Crossword Genius

Taking for a ride that leaves one back at same ferry port? (6-8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

double-crossing

'taking for a ride' is the definition.
(both can mean tricking someone)

'leaves one back at same ferry port?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'one' could be 'i' (Roman numeral) and 'i' is present in the answer.
'same' could be 'do' and 'do' is located in the answer.
'port?' could be 'l' (abbreviation for L - 'port' is 'left' on a boat) and 'l' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'that' acts as a link.

(Another definition for double-crossing that I've seen is " cheating".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
