Crossword Genius

Tantrum and row not ending -- go back to quibble (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pettifog

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'to quibble' is the definition.
(synonyms)

'tantrum and row not ending go back' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'tantrum' could be 'pet' and 'pet' is located in the answer.
'not' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pettifog that I've seen before include "Raise absurd objection" , "trifle" , "Quibble as lawyers" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
