Crossword Genius

Tell me there’s one bird in fountain (4,2,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spit it out

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'tell me' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'one bird in fountain' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'bird' becomes 'tit' (tit is a kind of bird).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'fountain' becomes 'spout' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'i'+'tit'='itit'
'itit' put within 'spout' is 'SPIT IT OUT'.

'there's' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for spit it out that I've seen before include "Come on, say it quickly - or expectorate" , "Come on, say what's on your mind - expectorate if you wish" , "Say what one has to say" , "Say it quickly - even expectorate" , "Tell me forthwith!"" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sunday Times.
