Crossword Genius

Temple erected in support of sweet native American (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

choctaw

'native american' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'temple erected in support of sweet' is the wordplay.
'temple' becomes 'wat' (type of Asian temple eg Angkor Wat).
'erected' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'in support of' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (I've seen this in other clues).
'sweet' becomes 'choc' (I've seen this before).
'wat' written backwards gives 'taw'.
'taw' after 'choc' is 'CHOCTAW'.

(Other definitions for choctaw that I've seen before include "Tribe living in Mississippi, co-watch (anag.)" , "Brave" , "North American Indian" , "Native American - skating movement - cat chow (anag)" , "skating move" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
