Crossword Genius

Tempter in legend with Hamlet not represented (3,3,9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

the old gentleman

'tempter' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'legend with hamlet not represented' is the wordplay.
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'represented' indicates anagramming the letters.
'hamlet'+'not'='hamletnot'
'legend' put after 'hamletnot' is 'hamletnotlegend'.
'hamletnotlegend' anagrammed gives 'THE OLD GENTLEMAN'.

'in' acts as a link.

(Another definition for the old gentleman that I've seen is " Tempter".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
