I believe the answer is:

xenopus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'filling hopper' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'ten work with nurse' is the wordplay.
'ten' becomes 'X' (Roman numeral).
'work' becomes 'opus' (an opus is an artistic work).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'nurse' becomes 'EN' (abbreviation for state-enrolled nurse).
'opus' put after 'en' is 'enopus'.
'x'+'enopus'='XENOPUS'

(Other definitions for xenopus that I've seen before include "African clawed toad" , "frogs once used for pregnancy testing" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
