Tenacious types good to have in rows (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tigers

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'tenacious types' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both people as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'good to have in rows' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'good' could be 'g' (abbreviation) and 'g' is found within the answer.
'rows' could be 'tiers' (tier is a kind of row) and 'tiers' is located in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tigers that I've seen before include "Large felines of forests" , "Big striped cats poetically burning bright" , "Great striped animals, poetically burning bright" , "Large striped felines" , "strong economies" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
