Tennis players may play them for one point (7)
I believe the answer is:
singles
'tennis' is the definition.
(I know that singles is a type of tennis)
'one point' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'single' (similar in meaning).
'point' becomes 's' (South).
'single'+'s'='SINGLES'
'players may play them for' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for singles that I've seen before include "Form of tennis" , "Non-return tickets" , "Type of tennis match" , "Ones" .)
