Crossword Genius

Tense during peculiar ritual in name only (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

titular

'in name only' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'tense during peculiar ritual' is the wordplay.
'tense' becomes 't' (abbreviation used in many dictionaries).
'during' is an insertion indicator.
'peculiar' is an anagram indicator (a peculiar or strange ordering of the letters).
'ritual' with letters rearranged gives 'tiular'.
't' put into 'tiular' is 'TITULAR'.

(Other definitions for titular that I've seen before include "See" , "Nominal" , "Having name of ruler but without real authority" , "as figureheads" , "Like certain churches" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
