Crossword Genius

Terrible flaw in staggering round the bend (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

awful

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'terrible' is the definition.
(I know that terrible can be written as awful)

'flaw in staggering round the bend' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'bend' could be 'u' (a U-bend is a kind of bend - pipe under sink) and 'u' is found within the answer.
an anagram of 'flaw' is 'awfl' which is within the left over letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for awful that I've seen before include "The pits" , "Dreadful, really bad" , "Fearsome" , "Dreadful, nasty" , "Extremely bad or unpleasant" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
