I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'down the road' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'tesla cracks concrete after flipping' is the wordplay.
'tesla' becomes 'T' (scientific unit).
'cracks' means one lot of letters goes inside another (some letters create an opening in the word).
'concrete' becomes 'real' (associated in meaning).
'after flipping' says the letters should be written in reverse.
't' placed within 'real' is 'retal'.
'retal' in reverse letter order is 'LATER'.

'further' is the link.
This may not be right. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

(Other definitions for later that I've seen before include "Tardier" , "After a given point in time" , "there's more behind" , "bye" , "succeeding" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
