I believe the answer is:

father brown

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'detective' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'that woman spreads thick toast' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'woman' could be 'row' and 'row' is found within the answer.
'thick' could be 'fat' (associated in meaning) and 'fat' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for father brown that I've seen before include "10 [SLEUTH]" , "G.K. Chesterton's detective character" , "famous solver" , "Chesterton character" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
