windrows

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the lines of raked hay drying out' is the definition.
I don't know anything about this answer so I can't tell whether this works.

'the casements cross river' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'river' could be 'r' (abbreviation for river) and 'r' is present in the answer.
'casements' could be 'windows' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'windows' is found in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for windrows that I've seen is " lines of crops drying out".)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
